Dates:

Venue:
Mau Forest Complex-Nakuru,Kenya

Event, Participants and Funding:

The Participatory 3-Dimensional Modelling (P3DM) and PGIS Practice Training sponsored by CTA and IPACC was conducted in Nakuru, Kenya from 9th to 21st August, 2006. The training was conducted at the fringes of the Mau Forest, Nakuru. It involved Ogiek Indigenous Peoples, Pupils from Local Schools, University students and Teachers and Representatives from the local authority.

This exercise brought together about 110 participants from the local community and institutions and trainees from Uganda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Cameroon, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana and Ghana. The exercise was part and parcel of the on-going struggle of the Ogiek Indigenous People for the recognition of their ancestral territorial rights and was organized by ERMIS Africa in the context of her regional mandate to build capacities of development practitioners in spatial information management and communication.

This is in realization that mapping is a crucial step towards securing and planning for the management of territories, cultures and natural resources of local communities which are otherwise put under increasing pressure by globalization, higher economic forces and top-down land distribution. The expectation was that at the end of the training, participants would be in a position to replicate the P3DM process in their respective countries.
