Background of P3D Modeling Mapping

The thrust of this training comes from the outcome of the "2005" Mapping for Change International Conference -attended by 145 delegates from 45 countries, which confirmed that effective networking and capacity building among development practitioners on good community mapping practices are top priorities. 87% of the participants prioritised the establishment of regional focal points. The development of training modules and the delivery of training opportunities were listed as top priorities by 96% and 92% of the participants respectively.

Participants identified ERMIS-Africa as the potential Regional Centre for Community Mapping for the Eastern, Central and Southern Africa regions. ERMIS-Africa has taken the call and embarked on strengthening its networking capacities by establishing a regional community mapping discussion group. In addition, ERMIS-Africa has, since Sept 2005, hosted 3 regional PGIS training courses on local and regional planning as well as multi-stakeholders watershed management. These activities have been organised in collaboration and with financial and/or technical support provided by CTA, ITC and Christensen Fund.

In an effort to address the above issue and to facilitate wider adoption of the practice, ERMIS Africa is implementing a CTA sponsored project dubbed as "Strengthening the East African Regional Mapping and Information Systems Network". To meet this goal ERMIS Africa has, with help and technical support from CTA established a virtual "Community Mapping Network for Eastern, Central Africa" dubbed CMN-ECA

The facility offers practitioners in Africa, who often operate in remote areas and at times with isolated local communities, a platform to share their knowledge, skills, ideas, strategies, and experiences on community mapping technologies, approaches and skills. In addition, ERMIS has set-up and is establishing a Regional Resource Centre for PGIS and Community Mapping with seed-money from CTA which has enable the purchase of over 300 books on the subject.

This Regional Training on Participatory 3-Dimensional Modelling and Participatory GIS Practice form has been organised in Mau Forest, Nakuru, with the ancestral areas of Ogeik indigenous Community.
